What is spirituality? It is having a religious belief, and using prayer to positively affect your daily life and well-being. As William James noted, prayer can be seen as ‘every kind of inward communication or conversation with the power recognized as divine’.

• Lower mortality rates compared to those who do not attend religious services at all
• Spirituality and religiosity are also commonly linked to lower blood pressure and a lower incidence of hypertension.
• Better blood lipid profiles; those who attend religious services regularly report lower LDLs and higher HDLs
• Better immune function
• Lower need for long-term health care, empirically observed fewer hospitalizations

Enlightened spirituality is not just mysticism; scientific studies of spirituality have revealed tangible health benefits. As quoted in Pratt and Matthews’ excellent book, many studies on religion and health indicate ‘a trend toward better health and less morbidity across the board in the presence of higher levels of religiosity’.
