How to Meditate for Beginners

If you meditate regularly, you will be able to attain a relaxed meditative state quickly. A quick tip for beginners: if you are having difficulty in keeping out distracting thoughts, choose a mantra to repeat silently and say it over and over, until all negative thoughts float out of your mind.

As Herbert Benson, a doctor a Harvard, noted in his research The Relaxation Response, here’s a quick way to attain a meditative mental state:

  1. Sit or lie down quietly. Close your eyes, deeply relax all your muscles, beginning at your feet and ending at your face.
  2. Breathe through your nose and become aware of your breathing. As you breathe out, say a word (‘One’ or ‘Om’ would be good). Breathe in, and each time you breathe out, say the word again. Repeat until it becomes natural and almost effortless.
  3. Continue doing so for ten to twenty minutes. Open your eyes to check the clock if necessary, but avoid using an alarm.
  4. After the ten to twenty minutes, lie quietly for a feel minutes.
  5. At all times, clear your mind of all distracting thoughts. Lie passively and allow your weight to sink totally to the forces of gravity.

Make it a habit to meditate with the relaxation response once or twice daily, and soon you will experience the following benefits:

  • Better awareness of the tension levels in your body, and thus a better ability to relax in any situation
  • Improved concentration
  • Reduced resting levels of the fight-or-flight portion of the autonomic nervous system
