Information JK Rowling

JK Rowling first received her idea for Harry Potter on a train ride from Manchester to London. She found herself suddenly inspired to write a story on a young boy who attends a school of wizardry.

The emotional elements of the story were amplified by the death of Rowling’s mother later that year; Rowling translated her feelings then into words – in Harry’s feelings of loss and longing for his parents.

In the book Harry Potter, JK Rowling associates herself most with Hermione; she sees Hermione as a caricature of her eleven-year-old self.

Autobiography JK Rowling

It may surprise you to note that Rowling suffered clinical depression after divorcing her first husband and travelling with her first daughter Jessica Rowling (Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes). When Rowling wrote her first novel, she lived on welfare.

Rowling’s story was far from one of only glamorous success. Beside living on welfare, Rowling was rejected by the first twelve publishing houses she approached, and was told to get a ‘regular job’ – because it was not possible to make money from writing children’s books.

But Rowling eventually succeeded with Bloomsbury, the first publisher that agreed to publish her book. An auction was later held in the United States for the publishing rights, netting $105,000 for Rowling – the single largest sum of money she had encountered then.

JK Rowling Biography

Subsequent Harry Potter books have won numerous awards – the Nestle Smarties Book Prize, the prestigious British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year, the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year award, and more. Each novel has broken all previous sales records. The seventh novel sold 11 million copies in the UK and the US on its first day of release. JK Rowling’s books have been translated into 65 languages.

The Harry Potter brand is now estimated to be worth more than $15 billion.

Rowling was also runner-up for the TIME Person of the Year 2007 award, for her instrumental role in inspiring in children a strong passion for reading in spite of the digital revolution.
