Lawrence Ellison became a billionaire despite his humble beginnings. Adopted by Lillian Spellman Ellison and Louis Ellison when he was 9 months old, Larry still does not know the name of his father.

After his adoptive mother passed away in his second year of college, Larry dropped out of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He later attended the University of Chicago for just one quarter.

Oracle Corp

Founding Oracle Corp in 1977 was the first step to riches for Larry Ellison. Inspired by a paper on relational database systems authored by Edgar F. Codd, he put up $2000 to found his company.

Despite ups and downs and fierce competition with Sybase and Informix Software, Oracle dominated the database industry. Oracle’s current major competitors include MySQL, Microsoft SQL and IBM’s DB2.

Larry has had a base salary of $1,000,000 up till 2009; it was recently announced that his salary for 2010 will be $1. He has been awarded 7 million in stock options by Oracle’s board every year since 2005.
