Setting Personal Goals
Setting Personal Goals. Here are the most effective strategies to use as you set your goals.
Definition of Goal
A goal is a specific outcome that you desire. It is a carefully articulated sentence that motivates and empowers you to work towards an ultimate objective. Goals can often be divided into three categories – what you want to be, what you want to do and what you want to have.
Writing Goals and Objectives
As Zig Ziglar notes, “Written goals transform you from a wandering generality to a meaningful specific.”
Writing your goals down triggers the subconscious in many powerful ways. Through the Law of Attraction, your subconscious mind will begin to work in combination with your superconscious mind, and attract people, circumstances and events that align with your goals.
Set your goals
Identify the single largest problem
If you run into any obstacle in achieving your goal, identify the single largest problem that is holding you back. This is the obstacle that, if overcome, will propel you toward your destination.
Therefore, in setting personal goals, identify the single largest problem and resolve to concentrate entirely on this obstacle until you overcome it.
Identify the limiting step
In chemistry, the limiting reagent is the reagent that will determine the speed of the reaction. Similarly, in your personal life, identify the bottleneck that is stopping you from your achievement of your goals.
Once you identify this bottleneck, you can then focus on exactly how you can get rid of it. Ask yourself, “What is it in me that is holding me back?” As Brain Tracy suggests, this will almost always be the lack of a particular skill, quality or behavior. This is what you need to work on in order to move toward success.
Identify the resources you will need
Think along these three important categories: skills, knowledge and people. What is the most important piece of knowledge or skill do you need to acquire? Who do you need to help you move toward your goal?
Once you identify these resources, work on acquiring them – one step at a time, until you inevitably succeed. Setting personal goals is a powerful way to propel yourself forward in life.
